Depression

The Rainmaker

Depression is described as one part of Jackie Lemancyzk’s continuing struggle with her mental health, not as a condition resolved by a single period of treatment. Her testimony places that struggle alongside a claim Great Benefit denied and her account of years of mistreatment at the company.

Disclosure and Treatment

During cross-examination, Jackie corrects Leo Drummond’s suggestion that she had been committed to an institution. She explains that she voluntarily entered a treatment facility and stayed for two weeks, with the ability to leave whenever she wanted. She says she is struggling with both alcoholism and depression, and describes her present condition as uncertain beyond the immediate moment: she is okay now, but cannot know how she will feel the following week.

Jackie says her treatment was supposedly covered by her group policy through Great Benefit for twelve months after her departure from the company. Great Benefit denied the claim. The testimony thus connects her effort to seek care with a dispute over whether the insurance coverage she expected would pay for it.

Workplace Context and Testimony

Jackie describes six years of being passed around the office and treated as an object by people working for Great Benefit. She says the experience damaged her self-esteem, and presents her testimony as an effort to tell the truth about the company’s treatment of thousands of people and to fight back. Her account gives the disclosure of depression a concrete personal context, while stopping short of reducing the condition to a single cause.

The courtroom exchange also shows the risk of making her mental health a means of discrediting her. Drummond raises her stay at the facility to challenge her testimony; Jackie distinguishes voluntary treatment from commitment and answers by describing both her need for care and the unpaid claim. Her depression is therefore disclosed in a contested setting, but she speaks as a witness with a purpose, not merely as the object of cross-examination.
